Terroir Box: Pommard - The Underdog, With A Bite!
Gevrey, Vosne, Volnay.....these are likely the first names which come to mind when thinking about your favourite Burgundies; but however "underdog" Pommard may be, it is never to be counted out! Essentially the polar opposite to Volnay's voluptuousness and filigreed refinement, the iron-rich soils of Pommard give it a bite and rusticity similar in many ways to Gevrey-Chambertin. Many of them need plenty of time to round out the rough edges, while others present themselves far more elegant than expected in the hands of certain producers. At any rate, the only way to really understand this fascinating and undervalued village, is to try for yourself!
