Rockstars: Abadia Retuerta - Take Me To Church

A ruined monastery is miraculously reborn, into not only one of the most exquisite Hotels in Spain, and not only a one-star Michelin restaurant, but far below, in the ancient arched cellar, lie some of Spains best wine production as well. Abadia Retuerta is both a return to the old ways of the region, while embracing experimentation and forward thought. Angel, the winemaker, ardently opposed any ties to the appellation, thus granting himself complete freedom to express grape varieties in unique single vineyards which the rules would otherwise not allow; thus, Single-Parcel Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, of course Tempranillo, and even Petit Verdot, become the stars of this lineup. They also produce one of Spain's most sought-after and magnificent Bordeaux-style white wines, the "Le Domaine", here from the Magnum and with perfect bottle-ageing. What the historical greats like Vega Sicilia once paved the way for, and perhaps later forsook, is alive and well here at Abadia Retuerta - a religious experience, to say the least!
