Rockstars: Rioja, Remirez de Ganuza

Fernando Remirez de Ganuza started out as a vineyard broker, and only later in 1989 did he first try his hand at winemaking... and he certainly didn't start quietly. It was like a revolutionary gunshot, heard clear across Rioja Alavesa - no more overly oxidised, poorly sorted, carelessly blended, simply mediocre table wines! Single vineyards would be chosen for their ancient vines, bunches would be meticulously sorted and even clipped to be used in different bottlings, new technology would be invented to crush the grapes more gently and purify the extraction, and attention to detail would be paramount.

The whites are almost Burgundian, and the Reds have a distinctly Bordelaise regality, while unquestionably conveying their proud Rioja terroir. Rioja simply doesn't get much better than this!
